TOP TEN THINGS TO IMPROVE M.A.P. SCORES
I spent a couple of days looking at what NWEA provides, what the internet has to offer, and what some of our own teachers have to say. What I've tried to come up with are some ideas, based on the research I've done, at what teachers are doing to improve their M.A.P. scores. By no means is this an exhaustive list or would we expect you to do them all. But, hopefully it gives you some ideas. As you look through the list, anything in orange is a link that will provide more information.
1) LOOK AT CLASS BREAKDOWN REPORT BY GOAL TO SEPARATE STUDENTS ACCORDING TO RIT SCORES.
2) PLACE STUDENTS IN GROUPS USING LESSON PLANNING PAGES FOR MATH AND READING. You click on the area you are studying and sort students according to their RIT scores to possibly use in Guided Math or Guided Reading.
3) CHECK THE CHART BELOW TO SEE IF STUDENTS ARE ON PACE TO GO TO COLLEGE BASED ON THEIR COLLEGE RIT SCORE (And possibly use this calculator to see how much they'd have to improve to get there.

4) DISCUSS GOAL FOR SPRING WITH STUDENTS, USING THE STUDENT GOAL SETTING SHEET or ANYTHING FROM THE MADISON SHARED FOLDER, AND MENTION GOALS OFTEN. (You may or may not want to mention the above chart depending on the student.)
5) MAKE SURE STUDENTS ARE AWARE OF THEIR RIT SCORES AND HAVE THEM USE ONLINE RESOURCES BASED ON THAT RIT SCORE. (You may also want to check out examples at different RIT levels. This might be a good idea during intervention time)
6) KEEP UP TO DATE ON THE LATEST RESEARCH AND MAKE SURE PARENTS ARE AWARE OF HOW THEY CAN HELP. (This Tool-Kit may help)
7) BE KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT VOCABULARY STUDENTS NEED TO KNOW AT EACH RIT SCORE. (Just look at pages 1-5 Reading and 10-18 Math. Possible idea: Go over the words in a Guided Reading Group of kids at the same RIT Level)
8) ONCE A WEEK PER SUBJECT SEPARATE STUDENTS DURING INTERVENTION TIME TO INSTRUCT THEM AT THEIR RIT LEVEL.
9) HAVE STUDENTS READ BOOK NOT ONLY AT THEIR LEVEL, BUT MAYBE A LEVEL ABOVE.
10) TALK TO EACH OTHER - MOST OF THESE IDEAS ARE YOURS!
